September 18th – October 3rd 2010
Everyone has heard of the Oktoberfest in Munich. The 16-day festivals is not only one of the most famous events in Germany, but with some six million people attending each year, is also the world’s largest fair – and beer festival.
The roots of the original “Oktoberfest” go back to October 18th, 1810 when Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen (namesake of the Theresienwiese festival grounds) organized a great horse race for the commemoration of their marriage. By 1960 the festival turned into an enormous world-famous event not only for Bavarian royalty but visitors from all over the world.
To many Bavarians the festival is not just an excuse for drinking, it is an important part of their culture. Traditionally a twelve gun salute and the tapping of the first beer at 12:00 by the Mayor of Munich with the infamous “O’zapft is!” (”It’s tapped!” in Bavarian slang) in the Schottenhamel tent open the festivities every year. On the third Saturday of September the ‘Wies’n’ publicans, set off at 11 am on their colorfully decorated floats pulled by horses and make their way along Schwanthaler Strasse towards the Theresienwiese. There are currently fourteen of the main Oktoberfest tents on the Wies’n, making sure that there is something right for everyone. In the tents you can listen to live brass brands play traditional Bavarian music and also more up-to-date music, eat delicious Bavarian specialities like pretzels with a diameter of 15 inches and, of course, drink beer by the litre. The event has some impressive statistics: the 14 giant tents with a total seating capacity of 100,000 serve approximately 6,940,600 liters of beer every year and about 142,253 pairs of pork sausages are consumed.
You can enjoy yourself and dance and sing until the early morning hours with hundreds of people from all over the world. But the event is not just for drinking and eating! This was originally also a family event, which is why the loud music doesn’t start until after 6 pm and there are tents with a more tranquil feel to them.
2010 marks the 200th Anniversary of Oktoberfest, so you should not miss the chance to be a part of this world-famous festival’s anniversary!
